About PlayVersusAI
Where classic strategy meets modern artificial intelligence. Play, learn, and sharpen your skills against opponents that never stop improving.
Our Mission
PlayVersusAI started as a passion project with a simple idea: build AI opponents worthy of your time for the board games you grew up loving. Too many online board games treat single-player as an afterthought, offering AI that either makes random moves or plays so perfectly it feels unfair. We wanted something in between — opponents that challenge you, adapt to your skill level, and genuinely help you become a better player.
Our goal is to create a platform where anyone, regardless of experience, can sit down and enjoy a strategic game against an intelligent AI. Whether you're a complete beginner learning the rules for the first time or an experienced player looking to test advanced strategies, PlayVersusAI has a difficulty level designed for you. Every game you play is tracked, every move is recorded, and every victory counts toward the global leaderboard.
We believe the best way to improve at strategy games is through practice against a strong, consistent opponent — one that's available 24/7, never tilts, and always brings its best. That's what we're building here.
The Games
We currently feature four classic strategy games, each with its own AI engine tuned to provide a rewarding challenge. Every game supports full replay recording, leaderboard tracking, and AI coaching.
Connect 4
Drop tokens and connect four in a row against a bitboard-powered AI that sees dozens of moves ahead.
Mancala
The ancient seed-sowing game. Plan your captures and chain moves to outscore the AI in this timeless classic.
Checkers
Jump, capture, and king your pieces on the classic 8x8 board. The AI fights for every square.
Reversi
Flip your opponent's discs and control corners. Every single move reshapes the entire board.
Each game offers multiple difficulty levels so you can find the right challenge:
Easy mode is perfect for learning the rules and building confidence. Medium provides a solid challenge for casual players. Hard mode plays strong, punishing tactical mistakes. And AI Training mode? That's the real test — the AI searches as deep as it can within a strict time limit, playing at near-optimal strength. Beating AI Training mode earns serious bragging rights on the leaderboard.
How Our AI Works
We didn't take shortcuts with our AI engines. Each game uses established game theory algorithms that have been refined over decades of computer science research, implemented and optimized specifically for browser-based play.
For Connect 4, the AI uses a bitboard representation — encoding the entire game board as a pair of 64-bit integers — combined with a negamax search algorithm. This allows it to evaluate millions of positions per second directly in your browser. The bitboard approach makes move generation, win detection, and threat analysis blazingly fast.
For Mancala, Checkers, and Reversi, the AI uses the classic minimax algorithm with alpha-beta pruning. Alpha-beta pruning dramatically reduces the number of positions the AI needs to evaluate by cutting off branches of the game tree that can't possibly lead to a better result. This means the AI can search deeper and play smarter within the same time constraints.
On AI Training mode, the system employs time-limited iterative deepening: it starts with a shallow search, then progressively searches deeper and deeper, refining its evaluation with each pass. The AI has exactly 2 seconds to think, and it uses every millisecond, searching as many levels deep as it can before time runs out. This produces the strongest possible move within a fair time window.
The AI also learns from human wins. When a player beats the AI, the system extracts the winning strategy — the sequence of moves and positions that led to the victory — and saves it. Over time, the AI incorporates these patterns, improving its play against the very strategies humans use to beat it. The more you play, the smarter it gets.
The AI Coach
Playing against the AI is fun, but understanding why you won or lost is how you actually improve. That's where the AI Coach comes in — a real-time analysis system built into every game on the platform.
During gameplay, toggle Coach Mode to get live move recommendations. The coach evaluates your position and suggests what the strongest play would be, helping you learn patterns and develop intuition as you play. It's like having a strategy tutor sitting right next to you.
After the game ends, the coach provides a full post-game review analyzing every single move you made. Each move receives a rating:
The coach also shows principal variation lines — the sequence of optimal moves that would have followed from any point in the game. Wondering what would have happened if you'd played differently on move 12? The coach shows you exactly how the game would have unfolded with perfect play from both sides. It's a powerful way to learn from mistakes and reinforce good decisions.
What's Coming Next
PlayVersusAI is actively developed, and we have big plans for the future. Here's a look at what's on the roadmap:
- Player vs Player Multiplayer — Challenge your friends or get matched with opponents at your skill level for real-time head-to-head games.
- More Games — We're expanding the library with more classic board and strategy games. Have a favorite you'd like to see? Let us know.
- Weekly Tournaments with Prizes — Structured competitive events with brackets, seedings, and rewards for top finishers.
- Mobile App — A dedicated mobile experience so you can challenge the AI anywhere, anytime.
- Deeper AI Coaching — Move-by-move analysis with natural language explanations, pattern recognition, and personalized improvement suggestions based on your play history.
- Community Features — Player profiles, game sharing, discussion forums, and the ability to follow and spectate other players' games live.
This isn't a static site that's "done" — we ship updates regularly, and every feature above is something we're actively working toward. The platform will keep growing as long as there are players who want to sharpen their skills.
Open to Feedback
We're a small team building something we genuinely love. If you have ideas for new features, games you'd like to see added, bugs you've found, or just want to say hello — we'd love to hear from you. Player feedback directly shapes what we build next.
